Nestled in the charming streets of Colmar, L’Épicurien offers a dining experience that seamlessly blends regional French Alsatian cuisine with an exceptional selection of wines. From the moment you sit down, you’re greeted with thoughtful, rustic starters that set the tone for the rest of the meal. In our case, a simple yet satisfying mix of pretzels and savory crackers was the perfect accompaniment to a chilled glass of Albert Boxler Riesling, a wine that instantly transported us to the rolling vineyards of Alsace with its delicate floral notes and crisp acidity. It paired beautifully with the light snacks, teasing the palate for what was to come.
As the meal unfolded, we were excited for the next wine—a 2015 Chablis Premier Cru from Montée de Tonnerre—only to discover that it was sadly corked. It’s always a disappointment when a bottle doesn’t live up to expectations, especially from such a revered vineyard. Fortunately, the restaurant was quick to provide a solid substitute: a 2015 Saumur from Domaine Guiberteau. Though different from the Chablis, this wine delivered beautifully. Clean and precise, with a slight minerality, it proved to be a refreshing pairing for the goose rillettes and salad. The Saumur’s delicate balance of fruit and acidity complemented the rich, creamy texture of the rillettes, while the pickles provided a refreshing counterpoint to the dish.
The main course, pigeon with foie gras, was nothing short of extraordinary. The deep, gamey flavor of the pigeon was elevated by a velvety foie gras, and the earthy richness of the dish was complemented by a well-chosen 2016 Saint-Joseph red. The wine’s subtle spice and balanced tannins cut through the luxurious richness, offering a pairing that felt both indulgent and harmonious without overpowering the dish.
As we rounded out the evening, L’Épicurien once again showcased how food and wine can truly enhance each other when chosen with care. For anyone visiting this part of France, it’s a must-stop for those who want to experience local cuisine at its best, served with a side of unforgettable wines—even when a quick substitution is needed.
